Food first, because you’ll be hungry the second you step outside. Skip the fancy places at the start and just eat where the lines are longest. Binondo street food will ruin you for life, fresh lumpia, kiampeng, oyster cake, all for like 100 pesos and you’re stuffed. If you want sit-down Filipino food, the old 24-hour places along Roxas Blvd still do the best crispy pata and kare-kare. Malls are your friend when it rains (and it will), food courts there are cheap and endless. Pro move: order extra rice, nobody judges.
Shopping? Two words: haggle hard. Divisoria is chaos but you can buy an entire wardrobe for what one t-shirt costs in the mall. Go weekday mornings if you hate crowds. Greenhills for fake watches, real pearls, and gadgets that may or may not explode. Bring a big eco bag and small bills, vendors hate breaking 1000-peso notes.
Nightlife depends on your mood. Poblacion in Makati is where all the cool bars hide in old houses, rooftops, speakeasies, live bands spilling out onto the street. Starts late, like 11 pm late. If you’re with kids or just want wholesome fun, head to Mall of Asia bay area at sunset, street performers, fireworks on weekends, ice cream that costs more than your dinner but whatever.
Getting around without losing your mind: jeepneys are 12-20 pesos and an experience, just shout “para!” when you see your stop and pass the money forward. Grab is safer at night or when it’s pouring. MRT and LRT are packed but fast, get a Beep card at any station so you don’t hold up the line fumbling for coins. Traffic is evil after 3 pm, plan everything before or after rush hour if you can.
Random survival stuff: carry a small bottle of water everywhere, it’s hot even when it’s raining. Wet wipes are gold, bathrooms are hit or miss. ATMs inside malls only, never the ones on random streets. And smile, say “salamat po” to tita vendors, Manila runs on small kindnesses.
That’s it. Follow these and you’ll eat well, spend little, and actually enjoy the madness instead of fighting it. Welcome to the chaos, you’ll love it.
